Consultants from the Kentucky Department of Education have collaborated to create sample school improvement plan components for closing the achievement gaps in specific content areas and improving performance of all students. Experts are consulted, and then plans for each level are drafted and sent to practicing experts in classrooms at appropriate levels. After making revisions suggested by those teachers and principals, the plans are forwarded to the Office of Curriculum Development for final review and revision. Once sample components in each content area are final, they are posted on this web page.
The Kentucky Department of Education is using a plan format that is generic for the purpose of providing an example, but does not endorse this or any format. Each district should choose or design a format that meets their planning needs, and schools should follow district policy on planning, using the format required by their district. Regardless of format, the content of the activities in the plan components that are posted are research-based and tested in Kentucky classrooms. Please regard them as best practice examples that can be used for teaching and learning.
The intent of this work is to provide school councils and school planning teams with specific instructional strategies expressed in a sample school improvement plan format that are research based, and tested and proven in classrooms with Kentucky teachers. Our goals for this year are to provide sample plan components for Writing, Mathematics and Science. As new plan components are approved, they will be posted.
