STLP Opportunities

Last Updated on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at 11:32 AM

State Recognized STLP Schools undertake projects, provide services or produce digital products that help the school and community understand or use technology. These projects created by Student Technology Leaders (STLs) impact both the classroom and community. Our goal is state recognition of every Kentucky school! To have your school registered as state recognized, email Elaine Harrison. For the latest information, join the KYSTLP listserv.

District Technology Showcases
Many school districts have discovered that holding their own local Student Technology Showcase is a great way to raise the quality of student work and increase public awareness of technology. A district may want to consider holding a district showcase or may want to attend another district's showcase first.

District Awards Programs
Many districts plan a community awards program for the STLP students.

District Art Shows
Some districts have given digital art students a way to display the wonderful creative work by providing an audience for the work. Digital work is displayed in the classroom, media center, or community locations.

District Video Festival
Some districts provide a night to showcase videos produced by students. Some districts have partnered with local cable companies and showcase student produced videos.

Summer Camps
Some districts pool the training of students in planning summer or intersession camps. This permits students to gain new technology and leadership skills. These new skills will impact the projects the students undertake during the year.

Fall Showcase
Schools may attend the showcase nearest to their school/district.

State Championship
STLP will gather in Lexington in May each year. There are many technology categories in which students may participate. A school may sign up and attend only or may register for student competitions.

STLP Celebration Program in May: Recognizing Quality Work
Many STLP schools submit products, services and projects to be recognized annually. The best performances in technology are also recognized at the annual celebration program at the Lexington Convention Center.

Other Opportunities
Generation YES (Youth and Educators Succeeding) in Olympia, Washington is a program that some STLPs like because it is highly structured and creates more partnerships between students and individual teachers.

Technology Student Association (TSA) is a career and technical program. Many student technology students are involved with both TSA and STLP, maximizing their leadership and technology experiences.
