STLP State Championship 2009

The fourth annual STLP State Championship will be at the Lexington Convention Center and Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky, Thursday, MAY 21, 2009.

There is no fee to attend. Schools must cover expenses for meals and optional over night stay. Parents, grandparents and other school staff are welcome to help chaperone.

All STLP Schools are encouraged to attend and compete in an area of technology. All competition areas must be preregistered.

 

The State Championship allows students from across the state to come together and demonstrate for other students, school and community persons what they know and can do with technology.

All STLP students are invited to the State Championship to learn and achieve. There are no registration fees. All schools attending must register online the number of students attending.

STUDENTS THAT ATTEND STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Students have many choices when they attend:
Visit the many playground tables and activities created for the event
Talk with other students, teachers, community persons and visitors that support technology
Attend student presentations
Listen to special music
View playground activities provided by supporting partners
Watch winning videos that will be shown at the event
View the many outstanding showcase projects in the large hall
Go to the Explorium nearby
Go to the Basketball Museum nearby
Sign up prior to the event for live performance competitions
View the finalists products on display
Attend the awards celebration


THREE WAYS TO PARTICIPATE AT STATE FOR ALL STLP SCHOOLS
1. JUST ATTEND
  Any STLP School may attend to learn from demonstrating and competing students.
2. BE INVITED
  Qualifying showcase projects
  Selected Engineers, presenters, cyber-reporters
  Finalist in product categories
3. COMPETE IN A CATEGORY
  Live performance or service categories

All that just attend or participate must register online by March 15

Schools wishing to attend only still need to register online. Information about the event will be emailed after the school registers.

BY INVITATION ONLY- CYBER GAZETTE REPORTERS SERVICE
Students will submit work to be scored prior to the State Championship
Students may apply by Dec. 15 as writers and podcast reporters
The best candidates will be assigned as a reporter on the Cyber Gazette 2009
The best reporters will be recognized at the annual awards program
Some past reporters may be invited to return as a Cyber Editors
    
BY INVITATION ONLY- ENGINEER SERVICE
Students applied and interviewed to be this years engineer for KTLS and State
Students that worked at KTLC in March are invited back to work at the state championship
Engineers schedules are flexible enough so as to be able to compete in live performances
All engineers will practice ethical, safe and legal behavior using technology
Engineers are not judged at state
Engineers for 2008-2009 will be recognized at the annual awards program

BY INVITATION ONLY- PRESENTER SERVICE
Presenter students apply (Elementary, Middle and High) online by December 15
Presenters are judged at state
The time and room assignments will be sent prior to the state event
The best presenter of each room will be recognized at the annual awards

BY INVITATION ONLY- SHOWCASE PROJECTS (From fall showcase to State Championship)
Skill set: Students demonstrate an authentic project.
All students practice ethical, safe and legal behavior using technology.
Schools receiving scores of 104 or higher are invited to compete at the state championship
Take an electronic image of your project and students at fall showcase
Email the electronic image for state awards when requested
Go online by March 15 to confirm the showcase is attending the statewide event
Confirm attendance by registering the school online
Bring all materials and equipment and set up
During State level 2 judging, the same rubric from fall showcase level 1 will be used.
During State level 3 judging, a shortened version of the fall showcase rubric
AFTER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
The top three showcases may be invited to NECC in Washington, DC June28-July 2, 2009. (To be confirmed)
The Central Kentucky Inventors group will invite the best Entrepreneurial projects and ideas to their fall event 2008 and 2009.
 

BY INVITATION ONLY- AWARDS PRODUCTION COMPANY
Selected students will be invited to be the team that produces the STLP Awards 2009 in Rupp Arena.

LIVE PERFORMANCES
May 21, 2009 Lexington Convention Center and Rupp Arena

The live performance competitions allow students to demonstrate the ISTE NETS Student Standards, Kentucky Department of Education Technology Program of Studies and the 21st Century Skills.
ALL COMPETITIONS:
Schools must determine which students have the best skills in which to represent their school in the categories below
Schools apply online for that competition category
Students may apply for more than one category, but conflicts may arise in the final schedule
Students may not ask to have any schedule change; competitions must run as stated
There are only 2 students per school allowed to apply to compete in each performance category
Some performance categories have more information on the next few pages, most are live performances based upon a prompt by the adult lead
Apply by March 15 to attend
Directions will be given onsite for each competition category
Best performances by age group  will be recognized at the annual awards

Performance Categories

Bench Challenge Performance
Students will troubleshoot and find a solution to a technology problem
Students sign up as a team- the two listed by the school are the team
Students first take a technology test to determine the finalists
8 teams will demonstrate and compete

Dell and Microsoft Gaming Performance
Students will demonstrate gaming skills (Games will not have any violence)

eInstruction Technology Quick Recall Performance
Students will answer technology questions using electronic clickers

Enterasys Networking Performance
Students will troubleshoot and find a solution to a network problem
Students first take a technology test to determine the finalists
Finalists will compete

Flight Simulation Performance
Students plan a flight

Georgetown College Transforming Robots Performance
Students will display and discuss robotic project

RCX (Robo Challenge Xreme) State Competition
Top teams from RCX regional tournaments will compete
Use the Lego Robots to traverse the Kentucky Horse Race/Park mat
Goal to outscore their opponents
Three division (EL/MS/HS) champions will be crowned

Kentucky School Boards Association (KSBA) Web Design Performance   
Students will bring their own  laptop (limited access to web) and power cords
Students will be given a prompt to create a web site

Minds on- Idea and Innovation Performance
Students will be given a prompt to create and design a solution to a topic

UK Programming Performance
Students are given programming tasks on site
Designed to include students at different levels of experience with computers and programming
No advanced programming is involved
